Cialis (tadalafil) is an inexpensive drug used to treat erection problems in men. It is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia, a condition in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged, causing problems with urination.
This drug is more popular than comparable drugs. It is available in both brand and generic versions.

Before taking this medicine
You should not use tadalafil if you are allergic to it.
To make sure tadalafil is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- heart disease or heart rhythm problems;
- a recent heart attack (within the past 6 weeks);
- congestive heart failure;
- angina (chest pain), high or low blood pressure;
- pulmonary hypertension (unless you are taking tadalafil for this);
- a stroke;
- liver or kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis);
- a blood cell disorder such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia;
- a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia;
- a stomach ulcer;
- retinitis pigmentosa (an inherited condition of the eye);
- a physical deformity of the penis (such as Peyronie's disease); or
- if you have been told you should not have sexual intercourse for health reasons.
Tadalafil can decrease blood flow to the optic nerve of the eye, causing sudden vision loss. This has occurred in a small number of people taking tadalafil, most of whom also had heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or certain pre-existing eye problems, and in those who smoked or were over 50 years old.
It is not clear whether tadalafil is the actual cause of vision loss.
Stop taking tadalafil and get emergency medical help if you have sudden vision loss.
Do not take tadalafil if you are also using a nitrate drug for chest pain or heart problems. This includes nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, and isosorbide mononitrate. Nitrates are also found in some recreational drugs such as amyl nitrate or nitrite ("poppers").
Taking tadalafil with a nitrate medicine can cause a sudden and serious decrease in blood pressure.
Some tadalafil can remain in your bloodstream for 2 or more days after each dose you take (longer if you have liver or kidney disease). Avoid nitrate use during this time.
How should I take tadalafil?
Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.
Cialis can be taken with or without food.
For erectile dysfunction, take Cialis just before sexual activity but not more than once per day.
An erection will not occur just by taking a pill. Follow your doctor's instructions.
During sexual activity, if you become dizzy or nauseated, or have pain, numbness, or tingling in your chest, arms, neck, or jaw, stop and call your doctor right away.
You could be having a serious side effect of tadalafil.
If you are taking tadalafil to treat erectile dysfunction, follow your doctor's directions and the guidelines in this paragraph. There are two different ways to take tadalafil, either daily or on an as-needed basis.
A. For erectile dysfunction, take Cialis just before sexual activity but not more than once per day.
B. An erection will not occur just by taking a pill.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Do not take tadalafil more often than once daily. Allow 24 hours to pass between doses.
Overdose
If you take too much tadalafil or take it together with these medicines, the chance for side effects will be higher.
What should I avoid while taking tadalafil?
Avoid drinking alcohol. It can increase your chances of dizziness or fainting.
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice may interact with tadalafil and lead to unwanted side effects. Avoid the use of grapefruit products while taking this medicine.
Avoid getting up too fast from a sitting or lying position, or you may feel dizzy. Get up slowly and steady yourself to prevent a fall.
Avoid taking Street drugs containing nitrates such as amyl nitrate and butyl nitrate ('poppers') while taking tadalafil.
If you are also taking an alpha blocker medication (such as doxazosin, tamsulosin) to treat an enlarged prostate/BPH or high blood pressure, your blood pressure may get too low which can lead to dizziness or fainting. Your doctor may start treatment with a lower dose of tadalafil or adjust your alpha blocker medication to minimize your risk
